What does science look like at Kingfisher?
At Kingfisher, our goal is to shape aspirational, prosperous scientists who are equipped with rich scientific knowledge; passionate; and are able to implement their understanding and experiences of the world for today and tomorrow’s future.
The pupils at Kingfisher CE Academy, will be exposed to a broad science curriculum that provides them with a variety of experiences. Our pupils will become confident learners who question, investigate and challenge ideas through a knowledge and skills-based curriculum.
At Kingfisher, we believe it is vital for all children to develop their scientific enquiry skills. During science lessons, the children learn to observe, pattern seek, classify, research and use a range of resources through engaging investigation where lessons are taught with a real-life context.
What does a science lesson look like at Kingfisher?
Science at Kingfisher, is broken down into small steps with clear learning objectives and a progression of skills and knowledge. Each unit, focuses on the working scientifically skills as well as the knowledge. Every unit explores a scientist related to that area to demonstrate science in real-life examples.
We have a consistent approach used across the school to support cognitive load.
In a lesson, you would see:
- What is science?
- Learning objective
- Flashback- opportunity to reflect on prior learning and make connections.
- Vocabulary
- Let’s Discover- New learning will occur here. Teacher’s will often use a hook or exploration activity to captivate learners.
- Let’s Do- This is where lessons may be recorded in books, in floor books or on tapestry.
- Let’s Discuss- This might be at the beginning or end of a lesson. It is a question, picture, odd one out to get the children to use their knowledge and vocabulary to explain scientific ideas.
